Water Samples Around the World

Materials

  • Apera instruments premium series PC60 5-in-1 Tester (pH/conductivity/TDS/Salinity/Temp) -calibrated at the recommended time intervals
  • Salinity Refractometer model:EFU007c-calibrated at the recommended time intervals
  • Kimwipes
  • Dropper
  • Deionized (DI) or distilled water
  • Sample collecting bucket

Methods

Methods for Measuring pH and Temperature:

1. Use water collection bucket to collect water sample, discarding the first bucketful to rinse the bucket
2. Place the Apera instrument in the water sample
3. Allow the reading to stabilize and record the pH
4. Allow the temperature reading to stabilize for 1 minute and record the temperature in Celsius
5. Rinse the instrument with DI water and properly stow away instrument

Methods for Measuring Salinity:

1. Use water collection bucket to collect water sample, discarding the first bucketful to rinse the bucket
2. Use the refractometer by opening the daylight plate and using the dropper to place 2-3 drops on the main prism
3. Close the daylight plate ensuring no bubbles are trapped beneath the plate
4. Allow the sample to temperature adjust for 30 seconds
5. Hold the daylight plate in the direction of a light source and look into the eyepiece
6. Observe the blue and white boundary line and record the reading in parts per thousand (ppt)
7. Use the DI water and the kimwipes to clean and dry the refractometer without submersing it in water
8. Put away and properly store the refractometer
