The Mission
Apparent Winds is a 10-year global expedition dedicated to collecting and sharing stories of environmental and cultural preservation while conducting marine research aboard sailing vessel ‘Resilience.’ We use storytelling to make tools for both the general public and in-school K-12 education, creating connections between people throughout the world.

About Us
The Apparent Winds Circumnavigation began in 2019 aboard SV J. Henry. The mission was to circumnavigate the world while seeking out individuals organizations and communities who are working to restore and preserve the natural environment and cultural identity. The circumnavigation was planned to span two years. In 2020, the global pandemic halted J. Henry and her crew from continuing around the globe. With the changes in itinerary, came new perspective. Apparent Winds has taken the lessons learned from the first expedition aboard J. Henry, and is now planning a progression into a larger expedition which will share the experiences and opportunities of a global expedition with a wider audience.
A larger sailing research vessel is at the heart of Apparent Wind’s next expedition. In addition to continuing our current mission, this new vessel will allow Apparent Winds to help conduct and provide a platform for marine research. The vessel will also allow for the experience of the global expedition to be shared with more people. Our goal is to learn what we can, share what we can and help in the global effort to revive our natural environment while inspiring others to find their own avenues to become impactful stewards of the planet for generations to come.
This new chapter in Apparent Winds is designed to be a continuous sailing expedition around and throughout the world. Each year, Apparent Winds will collaborate with partners to conduct marine research, provide educational opportunities both aboard and in the classroom, and continually document and share the journey through a strong communications program.

Research
The pursuit of knowledge and scientific discovery is at the core of our work. Throughout our expedition we will conduct research and collect scientific data. This data will be available to the scientific research community as well as the education community. In addition, our vessel will be available as a charter research vessel for scientists to conduct their own research aboard.
As a global community, we are more connected now, than we have ever been. This has provided the opportunity to work together and learn from each other. It has also been a major factor in the loss of individual culture in communities around the world. Now we are witnessing a strong effort within communities to restore their cultural identity. Often times we see that cultural preservation is being used as a tool for environmental preservation. We want to capture these stories of hope and action and share them with our followers.
Education
Giving future generations the tools and experiences they need to become effective stewards of our planet is critical for a healthy future. We invite students to join in on the global conversations of how to curb the impact of human activity as well as explore ways to actively assist the natural world in it’s recovery. This includes sharing our data, research, cultural stories and experiences with students in the classroom. We offer opportunities for live video streaming with Q & A between classrooms around the world and our crew members, scientists and people working to preserve their culture and environment. Our goal is to give students access to something tangible and real that will help them to discover their ability to be impactful leaders in their world.
